Site News Update.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: N/A  Added by: Kim Heise

Thanks for being patient as the news posts have been a little slow over the last several days. I've been putting in 12 hour days and when I finally get "paroled" from my cubicle the last thing I want to do is sit in front of another screen at home.

Next week will be very sporadic as we move our application into production (hopefully) but after that the frequency of posts should hopefully return to normal.

DVD-CD-RW roundup.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: Digit-Life  Added by: Kim Heise

Digit Life tests several new CD RW drives that also offer DVD playback. The drives tested are the Ricoh MP9060A-DP, AOpen DRW4624, Samsung SM-304 and Toshiba SD-R1002.

The users of old CD-Rs probably remember that they had to buy an extra CD-ROM for disc reading, otherwise their CD-R might break easily.

On the contrary, the modern devices come with all necessary optical technologies in one case.

Well, let's take a close look at them.

Acquisitions rumors abound.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: FiringSquad  Added by: Kim Heise

What a week for some very spectacular rumors and nVidia is always in the middle of these rumors. First a rumor was posted than nVidia was going to purchase 3dfx which would be absurd since 3dfx has nothing left to offer nVidia other than they would remove the competition. The new rumor for today (or maybe it was yesterday) is that nVidia plans to acquire ATi technologies.

To put the record straight the FiringSquad has posted a chat with all three companies nVidia, ATi and 3dfx and they all deny any such rumors. It was however interesting to see 3dfx's stock climb during the same time the rumors were floating around the web.

I'm not saying that any of these rumors are impossible but you can be rest assured that the public will be the last to know when it happens.

We have got the official words from the officials from NVIDIA, 3dfx, and ATI regarding the recent reports of possible acquisitions. Any surprises? Heck no.

NVIDIA was quick to respond, saying that both of the reports were total speculatory articles, and that rumors were something that the company does not comment on. 3dfx whistled a similar tune, denying any such rumor from anyone associated with 3dfx or Nvidia.

ATI had the most to say -- but not much more than the others -- saying that said acquisition is not going to happen, and the company will continue to compete against Nvidia. ATI was confident to add that there is still room for both companies to grow and succeed in the graphics market in the areas of desktop/integrated, notebook, set top and game console.

IBM unleashes the Power4.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: Ars-Technica  Added by: Kim Heise

Ars-Technica posts news about a new processor developed and manufactured by IBM that uses the RISC architecture. Here's the clip directly from the news article and you can read the full post here.

IBM has designed perhaps the most capable superscalar RISC core yet seen, and implemented the design in a state of the art 0.18 um SOI CMOS process utilizing 7 layers of copper interconnect. Not satisfied with that, IBM places not one but two processor cores on a huge 400 mm2 die with three independent, high bandwidth L2 caches, each approximately half a megabyte in capacity. In addition, the POWER4 device integrates controller logic for external L3 cache and main memory, along with interprocessor communications channels for a total chip complexity of about 170 million transistors...

The icing on the POWER4 cake is the packaging technology.... Drawing heavily on IBM’s extensive experience over the last several decades in designing and manufacturing large and sophisticated multi-chip modules (MCMs) for its mainframes, four separate POWER4 dice are combined on a single ceramic MCM mounted in a rugged metal frame less than 5 inches on a side. This single unit, resembling a S/390 mainframe thermal conduction module (TCM), contains the core of a tightly coupled 8-way symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) server system.

Apple falls short of lowered expectations.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise

I seriously hope Apple learns from releasing too many products far too often and not allowing the market to absorb the new concepts. Every time I walk into CompUSA there is a new Mac on display and I wonder what happens to the customer who just purchased last weeks model that will not work with all the new keyboards, mice etc...

Apple has developed some very exciting new technology trends but tries to hard to be different from the PC world that it does not allow the market to become comfortable with the new trend.

Granted, the PC market also changes almost daily but at least most of your components are backwards compatible on the new system.

Apple Computer on Wednesday posted earnings that fell short of lowered expectations and said it will have another disappointing quarter as it tries to burn off excess inventory.

And in forecasting relatively flat sales for the coming fiscal year, Apple executives said the company has instituted a hiring freeze for nearly all of the company and is keeping a close eye on costs.

Another Security Hole in Internet Explorer.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: eFront  Added by: Kim Heise

eFront posts news of a new security hole found in Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer. Here's some details and visit the web site for the full scoop. Most of the security flaws found in the past are rather obscure and they require very specific circumstances in order to become a threat but this new one is nothing to laugh at.

Bulgarian bug hunter Georgi Guninski has uncovered what he says is another serious security hole in Microsoft's Web browser engine - a glitch that could allow a malicious hacker to read the contents of files stored on a user's PC.

In a post to the BugTraq mailing list Thursday, Guninski reported that attacks using the exploit could be launched through a Web page, tripping up unsuspecting users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, or through HTML-formatted mail delivered to users of Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail application.

Guninski, a security consultant who also makes uncovering bugs his hobby, said he found the problem in Internet Explorer/Outlook 5.5, but that he figured it could affect earlier releases of the software as well.

On Oct. 5, Guninski made public an IE 5.5 security hole known as the "Virtual Machine ActiveX Component Vulnerability" that allows hackers to create Java programs that can execute ActiveX scripting commands unfettered by some standard ActiveX security. It meant someone delivering such a Java applet via a Web page or by mail could execute virtually any command on a user's system.

Microsoft released a patch for that problem on Oct. 12.

Who's Laughing Now.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: eFront  Added by: Kim Heise

Or should it say "Who's crying Now" for not having thought of this first - note: I'm not endorsing this sort of criminal behavior.

The 16-year old boy charged by the SEC with civil fraud has had the last laugh in the case. After paying is penalty of $285,000 he still managed to walk away with half a million dollars from the scheme. The boy made his money by buying low-priced stocks in large quantities, boasting about the stocks on financial message boards, and then selling the stocks within 24-hours after prices rose. This "pump and dump" scheme managed to make him an enormous amount of money before the SEC filed charges. In his "60 Minutes" interview, the boy said he made about $800,000 the SEC did not charge him for. He has already bought a Mercedes for his family.

Stephen King lets "Plant" grow.
Posted: 10/21/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise

Stephen King has posted his latest online horror novel "The Plant" online for your reading (and purchasing) pleasure.

PORTLAND, Maine--Thanks to readers who have been paying as they peruse, horror writer Stephen King will nurture "The Plant," his latest Internet venture.

The fourth part of the serial novel will be posted on King's Web site Monday.

King had threatened that he would stop after three installments if the percentage of those paying the $1 fee for each section dropped below 75 percent.

Readers who download each section of "The Plant" are asked, but not forced, to pay the nominal fee. The number of those paying had dipped to about 70 percent after the second installment, however, making it seem that King's honor system experiment was going to show that people could not be trusted to read now and pay later.

Heavy-weights throw themselves at home networking.
Posted: 10/18/2000     Source: SemiBIZNews  Added by: Kim Heise

The home networking industry is going to be a major cash cow over the next year. Any company or companies that can form a standard is going to be smiling all the way to the bank. SemiBIZNews reports that Cisco, GM, Motorola, Sun, TI, and others form yet another home-networking/automation consortium.

A group of companies, led by Cisco, General Motors, Motorola, Sun Microsystems, and Texas Instruments, here today announced the formation of what appears to be yet another consortium for the emerging but confusing home-networking/automation markets.

Called the Internet Home Alliance (IHA), the consortium includes 3Com, Best Buy, Cisco, CompUSA, General Motors, Honeywell, Invensys, Motorola, New Power Co., Panasonic, Reliant Energy, Sears, Sun Microsystems, and Texas Instruments.

The new consortium will define and develop the critical "building blocks" to minimize barriers currently inhibiting the mass adoption of Internet-enabled services to the home, said Bill Kenney, president of IHA and vice president of home and online services for Sears.

The Fundamentals Of Cache.
Posted: 10/18/2000     Source: SystemLogic  Added by: Kim Heise

Your computers system cache speeds and size are more important than most users realize when it relates to overall PC performance. Cache speeds can never be really too fast but they can be too large. Cache sizes that are too large cause the CPU to spend too much time deciding what to write into the cache and what not too.

SystemLogic has written an article explaining system caches and how they work. Here's clip to wet your appetite:

Before we delve into some of the basics of cache, let us get a simple understanding of the whole memory subsystem, known as a memory hierarchy. This term refers to the fact that most computer systems have multiple levels of memory, each level commonly being of a different size, and different speed. The fastest cache is closest to the CPU (in modern processors, on the die), and each subsequent layer gets slower, farther from the processor, and (generally), larger. One of the reasons why each progressively-lower level on the memory hierarchy must be larger (we'll look at some exceptions later) is due to the fact that each layer keeps a copy of the information that is in the smaller/faster layer above it. What this means is that the hard drive holds the information that's in the RAM, which holds information that is in the cache, and if there are multiple layers of cache, this process keeps going. The reason for this is explained later.

Wireless Ethernet Review.
Posted: 10/18/2000     Source: GamePC  Added by: Kim Heise

I'm hoping the price for wireless Ethernet options is going to drop significantly but it's not very likely until we some newer technology move into the market. I've always wanted to wire the house for Ethernet access from any room but it's a major job and it's not very cost effective either. It would be very practical to simply setup a wireless network in the house so I don't have to deal with cables.

Widespread wireless communications are starting to invade our lives. The majority of Americans have mobile phones, not to mention the majority of many Asian and European countries as well. Just as wired telephone and cable lines have evolved to allow broadband access to many people, broadband wireless access is well underway. There is another section of broadband connectivity and that is inside the home. People are well accustomed to using cordless phones and remote controls all throughout the house. It was just a matter of time before we begin to see wireless networks enter the home.

False advertising on web sites.
Posted: 10/17/2000     Source: ZDNET  Added by: Kim Heise

Nothing gets me more upset that online web stores posting items for incredibly low prices and then when you try to order the product they tell you it's a misprint. I agree that in some rare case it may be a misprint but often they use the tactic to attract customers who find the low price when using search engines to purchase items.

ZDNET has posted a commentary of one such case at Buy.com who posted the price of a monitor far below the average price on any other web site. Buy.com made the correct move by shipping at least 400 of these monitors at the low price and then changed the price. Unfortunately some customers cried foul and got the lawyers involved and then everything went down the drain. The lawyers ended up taking home $190,000 plus processing fees and the customer received a measly $50 check.

I strongly agree with the ZDNET author in that Buy.com did the right thing by honoring as many sales as it did with the reduced price. But having the greedy lawyers move in to make a huge profit and the customer simply gets $50 is stooping too low.

On the other hand - online stores should be very careful about false advertising. If the company refuses to honor any sales at the low price then the law should be applied to force them to make some sort of restitution.

If you incorrectly mark the price of an item in your online store, how much should you have to pay?

For Buy.com the answer is $575,000, the proposed settlement in a dispute over a $600 19-inch Hitachi monitor the company said it listed online for $164.50 for four days last February.

DesktopX preview available.
Posted: 10/17/2000     Source: eFront  Added by: Kim Heise

Most people are not familiar with a company called StarDock but they have developed some very impressive Windows applications. These programs allow you to customize your desktop so completely that you would have a difficult time guessing that it is in fact Windows. As an old Amiga user I am able to make my Windows desktop look exactly like the classic Workbench 3.0 environment thanks to Stardock's WindowsBlinds application.

The company is gearing up to release a whole new Windows customization tool called DesktopX with some fancy new features. Read the clip below regarding this exciting new product and visit this link for more information:

The hard-working guys over at Stardock have sent word that the first public debut of its up-and-coming software DesktopX is happening right now. The team has been working very hard on this new program, after completion of the newest version of Stardock's flagship software WindowBlinds, which premeired on BetaNews a few months ago. DesktopX is set to revolutionize the Windows interface, with a host of capabilities and functions to change just about everything you could want to.

According to documentation on the Stardock Web site, with DesktopX "A user can replace their Start bar, system tray, task list and everything on their desktop with DesktopX objects that can do the same things but with a much greater degree of customization and functionality. Because DesktopX objects (unlike icons and other GUI elements on Windows) can send and receive messages, they have all of the abilities of a full blown program without any of the overhead of running separate programs. Users have control over what degree of customization they desire."

This object-based program allows the easy integration of new objects and old ones, without the need for you to personally create each one. A vast library of objects is being developed by users and Stardock members already, and currently contains hundreds of these objects for you to use.

With DesktopX you can create custom desktops for your company, for your children, or for other people who need more or less out of their desktop.

Fujitsu Introduces 20.4 GB Per Platter Line Of Hard Drives.
Posted: 10/17/2000     Source: Electic Tech  Added by: Kim Heise

It's simply staggering to see how cheap hard-drives are getting and they just keep getting larger in size. It keeps one wondering how much data they can squeeze on a single platter before reaching physical limitations. At this point I'm not prepared to venture forth a limit but eventually the hard drive manufacturers are going to have to develop a new storage medium.

Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA) today announced its latest 20.4 GB per platter desktop hard disk drives. The MPG3xxxAT/H series offers industry-leading data transfer rates, leading-edge interfaces, and sweet spot capacity points. With both 5400 and 7200RPM speeds and the availability of Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motors, this series is one of the fastest and quietest IDE desktop series in the industry today.

The new Fujitsu MPG3xxxAT/H series includes capacities of 10.2GB, 20.4GB, 40.9GB, at 20.4GB per platter and 30.7GB at 15.3GB per platter. With data transfer rates up to 60.7MB/s, seek times as low as 8.5ms, lower power consumption, and a 512KB or 2MB buffer, these new drives offer outstanding performance for today's wide-range of desktop applications. In addition, the new Fujitsu desktop series incorporates Ultra ATA/100 for maximum media transfer rates up to 100MB/sec.

"The new desktop series from Fujitsu includes quality drives with innovative advancements such as FDB and Ultra ATA/100. With new product offerings such as the MPG3xxxAT/H series, Fujitsu is well established as a top tier storage supplier," said Bill Ress, analyst for Data Storage Review, San Jose, CA.

AMD Launches 1.2-GHz Athlon.
Posted: 10/17/2000     Source: TechWeb  Added by: Kim Heise

AMD pulls into the lead on the mhz (or shall I say ghz) race from Intel. The new 1.2ghz AMD cpu gives the company a 200mhz lead over rival Intel. Added to the impressive new speed is the low cost price tag which is also something to behold.

The new 1.2-GHz Athlon is $612, significantly cheaper than the 1.0-GHz Intel Pentium III, at $669. The 1.1GHz, 1GHz, and 950MHz Athlons are priced at $460, $350, and $282, while the lowest-end 900MHz and 850MHz models are priced at $215 and $193. The 850-MHz Athlon, moreover, is little more than half the price of the 850-MHz Pentium III, which costs $348.

The 800MHz, 750MHz, and 700MHz AMD Duron processors, meanwhile, are priced at $170, $112 and $88 respectively. All prices are for lots of 1,000-unit quantities.

Intel has withdrawn its 1.1-GHz Pentium III until the second quarter of 2001, and will bank on the Pentium 4's release on Nov. 20 to retake the speed lead. In preparation, Intel sliced the prices of three low-end Pentium III processors on Sunday, indicating the company is thinning out its product line before the Pentium 4's arrival.

Survey: Government Can't Be Trusted With Data.
Posted: 10/17/2000     Source: TechWeb  Added by: Kim Heise

TechWeb reports on a phone survey asking random people if they think uncle Sam is trustworthy with their private data. After all the the news clips we have been reading/hearing in the press regarding leaked governmental secrets it would be very surprising if someone actually trusted the government with anything private and personal.

Most of the 1,000 adults surveyed by phone about their comfort with the government's ability to safeguard their personal data said businesses are more trustworthy.

Concern about security breeches and other computer crimes make 63 percent of respondents less likely to provide personal data to the government. Worries about misuse of government-held data plague 81 percent of Americans.

In a related finding, 72 percent of those surveyed say they don't feel digital signatures are secure enough to use on legal documents.

If this distrust continues, "this will be a barrier to the growth of e-government, which includes electronic tax filing, downloading forms, or registering a vehicle online," said Harris Miller, president of the ITAA.

Handspring Adds Color Display To Visor PDAs.
Posted: 10/16/2000     Source: TechWeb  Added by: Kim Heise

I'm still not impressed with the color palm-pilot PDA's (including clones) for an insane price tag of $400-$500. You can still pickup a 166mhz WinCE 3.0 PDA with color and MP3 audio support for around the same price with many more features. What you are paying for on the color palm PDA's is basically a huge software base.

Don't get me wrong - I love my Palm PDA just like any other owner but $400-$500 for color with no additional features (such as digital audio) it's simply not worth it.

Handspring Inc. on Monday announced the Visor Prism, the company's first PDA to feature a color display.

But consumers had better be prepared to pay for it. Although the handheld offers the same 8 Mbytes of RAM as the Handspring Deluxe, a new 64,000-color display and rechargeable batteries will cost consumers $449, half as much again as the Visor Platinum, a second product that the company also announced.

The Visor Platinum uses only a 16-shade grayscale display, leaving the color computing to its sister PDA, the Prism. Both the Visor Prism and Platinum contain 8 Mbytes of memory and are the first Visor handhelds powered by Motorola's DragonBall VZ 33-MHz processor, the company said.

Site Helps Cancer Patients Get Second Opinion .
Posted: 10/16/2000     Source: Newsbytes  Added by: Kim Heise

Here's something you don't see everyday. A new web site dedicated to helping people diagnosed with cancer and who wish to obtain a second opinion.

A new Web site — www.findcancerexperts.com — is designed to help those who have been diagnosed with cancer obtain a second opinion. It can put them in touch with a nationwide network of 50 leading cancer diagnosticians.

Whether the diagnosis is correct is perhaps the most important question confronting anyone whose doctor has delivered the terrifying news, says the Web site's founder, Barry Shmookler, a pathologist in Washington, D.C.

It is the question, he notes, from which every other crucial decision flows — whether to plan for a premature death, whether to submit to costly and painful treatment, and how aggressive that treatment should be. "People die of the complications of cancer therapy," Shmookler says. "It's not common, but it sure happens. Before you get started, you want to be sure the diagnosis is correct."

The service isn't free. Patients pay $80 by credit card. Shmookler says the fee goes toward maintaining his secure Web site. Within 24 hours, the site will supply the names of three top pathologists, plus detailed instructions on how to ship biopsy slides.

Microsoft beefs up Windows for cars.
Posted: 10/16/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise

This would have been the perfect news post for Halloween. Imagine how scary it would be to be running Windows in your car while going 55mph down the freeway. All of a sudden some idiot pulls in front of you and so you slam the brakes only to see the "blue screen of death" on your car's computer. If you think that was scary imagine that the "blue screen of death" would be the last thing you see.

Microsoft introduced its newest software for in-car computing devices Sunday, as well as the industry standards it would like to see adopted for how computers and cars swap information.

Analysts predict that by 2006, nearly 50 percent of all new cars--and 90 percent of luxury vehicles--will have some kind of Internet capability. Dozens of automakers and electronics companies are vying for position in the young market.

Microsoft's unveiled the third version of its Windows CE for Automotive software Sunday. The first version was used in the Clarion AutoPC, a voice-controlled device that combined elements of a car stereo, cell phone and personal digital assistant. The second version will be used in the Internet computer GM plans to install on some Cadillacs later this year.

Bob McKenzie, the general manager of Microsoft's automotive business unit, said the new version of Windows CE could be used to control a variety of devices--everything from a simple, push-button cellular service system such as GM's OnStar, up to an in-dash computer that also controls video entertainment systems for passengers.

After four years of work, the number of cars with a Windows CE computer is only in the thousands. But McKenzie said the company expects the business to take off eventually.
