nVidia
NV-15 hardware information.
Posted: 03/21/2000
Source: The Register
Added by: Kim Heise
Let me start at the top
so you know what's the big excitement here: The nVidia GeForce 256 DDR is the
fastest video card on the PC market today and the GeForce 256 is also known as
the NV-10. News is starting to leak about the sequel to the GeForce 256 (NV-10)
called the NV-15 or the GeForce2 with some "mind-bending" performance.
To give you an idea, the current GeForce 256 (NV-10) DDR processes between
400-500 million pixels/sec and the upcoming GeForce 2 (NV-15) is said to
processes 1600 million pixels/sec. Now that's very impressive.
Anyway, the Register has posted some "hot" information regarding the
NV-15. Take a peak:
As we reported earlier
this year, Nvidia's NV15 chip is speeding towards completion. The chip is likely
to be called the GeForce 2 and will clock to between 180 and 200 MHz, according
to reliable sources.
And, as reported earlier, the chip will support between 32MB and 64MB of double
data rate (DDR) memory, and may also be able to use other memory types.
Creative Labs will be the first off the mark with a product, and its likely name
will be the 3D Blaster GeForce 2.
The fill rate may be as high as 1600 million pixels per second, a figure four
times greater than previous cards based on the NV10 - the current Geforce256 -
processor. That means we can expect 80FPS in Quake 3 at a resolution of 1024x768
in 32-bit colour. The transform and lighting (T&L) features will be
augmented by clipping, which is expected to increase the performance of the
chip.

Fake Athlons in Circulation!
Posted: 03/21/2000
Source: Computer Nerd
Added by: Kim Heise
For those of you out
shopping for AMD Athlon K7 CPU's be aware that there are fake AMD CPU's on the
market. Basically some unscrupulous individual is taking (for example) 550mhz
CPU's and marking them as 700mhz CPU's. If you should come across one of the
fake CPU's you note the seller's details and call AMD directly (should have a
hotline number on their web site).
The counterfeit CPUs were marked as Athlon 650 0.25 micron (C types) with serial
numbers on the case of 219936022369, 219936022600 and 219936022907. The paper
sticker inside the cartridge on the circuit card with the original serial number
had been removed and replaced with another sticker with slightly smaller size
and different printing than the original AMD sticker. The serial numbers on the
inside sticker were nearly but not exactly the same as on the cartridge
(219936022781, 219936022780, 219936022802, respectively).

Microsoft has released
the final Office 2000 SR-1 update and you can download the active setup program here.
I wish companies
would get rid of these active setup programs or allow users to download the
entire package manually because not everyone has dual T1's connected to their
home PC's for downloading these massive updates. It would be very helpful if one
could download the entire package from a fast location and then distribute it
via CD Rewritable or some similar medium.

98lite
IE removal system reaches RC1.

Added by: Kim Heise
98lite is a very
powerful utility that removes the integrated Internet Explorer 5.x interface
from Windows 98 and Windows 98SE. The same team is developing a similar version
for Windows 2000 to "strip" out Internet Explorer 5.x. Here's what the
Register team have to say:
Version 3.0 of 98lite,
the software designed to allow Windows 98 to run without the integrated Internet
Explorer, has reached RC1 stage and according to developer Shane Brooks final
code should be ready in a few weeks time. Brooks also promises a quick follow up
for Windows 2000, and dangles the prospect of an "embedded" version
that will cut the Windows 98 install down to 15-20 megabytes.

Netscape
6.0 to be released as beta next month.
Posted: 03/20/2000
Source: Yahoo
Added by: Kim Heise
Netscape will be
releasing a beta version of 6.0 within the next 25 days for testing. The new
browser implements many new exciting features via the "Gecko" HTML
rendering engine. Here's a list of some of the improvement:
-- Small Size and Speed: Netscape is reversing the
trend of software
bloat by developing a browser that is small
in size and excels in
performance. Customers benefit from a small
download and a fast
browser, while third-party developers
benefit from a compact browser
engine that can be easily embedded in
myriad network-ready devices.
-- Services on the Net: The most interesting
applications being developed
today are free, Web-based services. The
goal is to harness the Web for
the benefit of users, and Netscape 6 will
expose those services through
the browser. The best recent example is
Smart Browsing, which continues
to improve on one simple goal:
helping users to find the information
they want quickly.
-- Same-Time Messaging: Instant messaging with buddy
lists is emerging as
the next killer application on the Web.
Instant messaging is popular
and powerful because it enables people to
communicate quickly from any
distance, and notifies them when friends,
family, and colleagues are
online. In many cases, instant messaging is
becoming a low-cost
alternative to the telephone. It also
brings same-time community to the
Web by enabling people with common
interests to participate in their
own chat sessions.
-- Standards Compliance: Users insist on a
full-functionality Web
browsing experience. Because of its full
support for existing browser
technologies and industry-leading support
for the latest Web standards,
Netscape 6 will give users access to all
the power of the Web today and
will unleash the potential of Web standards
to build the Web
applications of tomorrow.
Top companies like IBM, Intel,
Liberate, NetObjects, Nokia, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems are going to adopt
the new "Gecko" HTML rendering engine.

Go2Call.com has developed a
hardware add-on device to your PC called "Fonenet Connect". This fancy
device allows you to plug any regular phone, including cellphones directly into
your PC so you can chat via online phone services. This is certainly one of
those "Why didn't I think of that?" stories.
Go2Call.com has taken the wraps of FoneNet
Connect, a self- powered PC interface unit that allows PC users to connect their
regular phone to the PC for voice chat, PC-to-PC calls and PC-to-phone Internet
telephony calls.
The $59.95 interface unit has been designed
to work with almost all regular phones, including cordless units. Thanks to
this, the firm says, users can hook up their cordless phone and stroll away from
their PC while making Net telephony calls.
The company says that the unit is a great
advance over messing around with microphones and speakers on a PC Internet
setup, and also, perhaps more importantly, the call quality is greatly improved.

Kudo's to my longtime
friend Andrew Bradford for forwarding me this link regarding Cisco's support for
IPv6. Cisco will be developing networking devices that support IPv6 to give the
much needed internet upgrade a boost. Currently the internet, as you know it
uses IPv4 which is slowing falling behind with the rapid growth of the
network.
Some of the much applauded features in IPv6 is faster packet routing routines
and larger network IP ranges.
Here' the direct quote from Andrew:
Cisco is pretty much the leader in backbone internet equipment and they're
only now coming out with the IPv6 support. I'm sure part of it has been trying
to get it done
right, but the RFCs have been out for a while. Interesting that Sendmail
8.10 with its IPv6 support just came out, and BIND 9 with IPv6 support also
is on its way sometime this year. Still, don't expect a huge rush to adopt
the "next generation Internet".

Intel's
upcoming "Foster" chipset to use DDR-RAM.
Posted: 03/17/2000
Source: The Register
Added by: Kim Heise
The team over at the
Register are always ahead of the news game and I wish I knew who their contacts
were. On to the topic: Intel is going to be using DDR-RAM on the upcoming
"Foster" chipset instead of the over hyped RAMBUS memory. That's not
difficult to see why since RAMBUS will cost you an arm & a leg and the performance
is negligible over current DRAM.
Here's was the Register has to say:
According to Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64 in the US, the
reason that server vendors have avoided Rambus memory is that they use lots of
DRAM in these systems, and would end up paying between four to six times the
cost per megabyte if they use RDRAM.
Also, he adds, the ServerWork (formerly
Reliance) chipsets support a 128-bit wide memory system, so they get more than
enough memory bandwidth (~2.1GB/second) using "plain old" PC133 SDRAM.
At the same time, Brookwood clarified market
share projections for Rambus chips, following our story yesterday. He said:
"The most aggressive RDRAM forecasts for this year call for ~120M chips,
enough for ~15M RIMMs. Since a typical high-end PC has slightly more than 128MB
of memory, this translates into 10-12M PC's, which is consistent with the
positioning of Rambus-based systems in the performance and/or enthusiast
segments."

Why
is my cable modem so slow?
Posted: 03/17/2000
Source: ZDNET
Added by: Kim Heise
Since cable modems
share bandwidth it seems obvious that one of these days the speed with begin to
slow down dramatically. However, my understanding is that it is still a long
time before this happens and you would hope the cable companies ramp up network
"pipelines" to accommodate the growth.
ZDNET has posted an article about
the rapid growth of the cable modem industry and that the cable modem companies
are not keeping ahead of the game.
The cable industry's rush to wire up America with high-speed Internet access
is running into a serious problem: Too many heavy Internet users are crowding
online at once, in some cases creating major bottlenecks and slowdowns.
If this is the case then it's more apparent than ever that the future is
going to go wireless with relatively unlimited bandwidth since you are not
squeezing all traffic through a tiny cable.

FreeBSD
4.0 final released.

FreeBSD 4.0 final has
been released and you can download it free today! FreeBSD is (as the name
implies) a free UNIX operating system that currently powers some of the major
web sites such as Yahoo.
FreeBSD offers advanced
networking, performance, security and compatibility features today which are
still missing in other operating systems, even some of the best commercial ones.
The quality of FreeBSD combined with today's low-cost, high-speed PC hardware
makes FreeBSD a very economical alternative to commercial UNIX workstations. It
is well-suited for a great number of both desktop and server applications.
You can download either the CD ISO image or the directory archives from ftp.freebsd.org.

Compaq
Announces PCs with 1GHz Athlon Processors.

Here you go, the first
1ghz machines are showing up available for those power hungry users. Compaq is
the first to announce systems shipping with 1ghz Athlon CPU's. I've heard HP and
Gateway are similarly about to ship new 1ghz systems.
HOUSTON, March 6, 2000 - Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:
CPQ), a global leader in consumer computing solutions, today announced the
first Internet PC featuring the 1GHz AMD Athlon, the fastest processor in the
consumer market. These systems will be available via Compaq's "At
Home" Web site and through Compaq's "Built For You" kiosks
located in thousands of popular retail stores across the United States.
Customers will be able to place orders beginning on Thursday, March 9, 2000.
As far as I know no companies have started shipping 1ghz P3 systems at this time
because Intel is having silicon production problems.
