VIA Tech to acquire  S3.
Posted: 04/07/2000     Source: Yahoo!  Added by: Kim Heise
It's official now that VIA is going to purchase chip maker S3. S3 had just acquired Diamond Multimedia late last year and now S3 is going to be swallowed by VIA.

S3 is the company behind the Savage2000 video processor featured on the Diamond Viper II and VIA is most famous for developing an alternative chipset for motherboards to Intel.

Taipei, April 6, 2000 (CENS)--VIA Technologies Inc., a leading PC chipset manufacturer in Taiwan, will soon announce its acquisition of the graphics chip division of S3 Inc., based in Santa Clara, California.

Water-cooling your PC.
Posted: 04/07/2000     Source: Cole3D  Added by: Kim Heise
This is no joke but some users are cooling their PC's with WATER! Here's the description:

As over clocking is a common practice those days, we need more and more cooling power. It is a good idea to increase the airflow but sometimes it gets noisy. Especially in my system, running 24/7 on windows 2000, which was equipped with no less than 8 fans.

Since I am running the system on a permanent basis, I wanted the damn thing to be totally quiet, like if it wasn’t even on. While this is a hard thing to achieve because you’d have to totally insulate the hard drive, water-cooling is a step in the good direction.

Several web sites have posted news information that nVidia will be announcing the sequel to the current video speed-king, the GeForce 256 DDR. The press release will be announced around the same time the 3dfx will be shipping the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 - not by coincidence.

Everybody is looking at 3dfx and nVidia to be the market leaders for the summer but ATI may have a surprise in store.

Voodoo5 in the news today.
Posted: 04/07/2000     Source: AnandTech  Added by: Kim Heise
The Voodoo5 is creating a major storm on the 3D video card front and Anandtech takes the new video card for a test drive and leaves us with some thoughts to ponder. The hardware features on the new Voodoo cards look very impressive but I'm still nervous about the status of the drivers that runs these cards.

I think it would be prudent to wait until the cards actually hit the streets and see how they stack up. When the card ship it will not include Windows 2000 support which I find is very disappointing. Apparently Windows 2000 drivers are around 6 weeks out after the release date.

One note that was very interesting from the article was that nVidia will be announcing the new NV-15 video card on April 15th. This summer will be very interesting in terms of 3D acceleration.....

Sun loosens restrictions with new Java revision.
Posted: 04/07/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise
This is the first good news I've heard on the Java front for sometime now. Sun is going to reduce the amount of restrictions for developers who want to make use of the new Java "JCP 2.0".

The more freedom the Java language is given, the more likely it is to follow it's indented "language for all" model. On the other hand to much freedom introduces various Java flavors that are contradictory to the idea of one language for all platforms.

A draft version of a new, more liberal way to control Sun Microsystems' Java software is scheduled to be released at the end of April, the company said today.

As previously reported, Sun invited several companies to help revise Sun's Java Community Process (JCP), a method Sun created to include individuals and other companies in setting the future course of Java as it spreads to new domains. Sun's proposal for the new "JCP 2.0" includes an executive committee that would expand control of new Java specifications beyond Sun. The new process also would "liberalize" the terms of participation.

Plextor 12x4x32 recorder review.
Posted: 04/07/2000     Source: Tech Extreme  Added by: Kim Heise
There are a number of CD ROM recorders on the market today but only one or two models lead the pack. Any CD ROM recorder from Plextor can be considered one of the leaders, especially the new 12x recordable version. This means you can copy an entire 650mb CD in roughly under 8 minutes. For the average consumer this may be a little overkill and the older 8x recordable version may just cover your needs.

Companies searching for high speed back alternatives may want to consider this drive for archiving daily changes. Also, the drive ships with a full backup/restore utility called CDRes-Q for archiving entire hard drives for recovery. This very handy little tool allows you to boot from a floppy disk and restore your entire hard drive with ease.

The drive ships using the SCSI2 interface with no IDE version planned and I believe the cost is around $400 although the article did not list the price.

More troubles for Intel.
Posted: 04/06/2000     Source: EETimes  Added by: Kim Heise
AMD announced more information on the upcoming "Thunderbird" Athlon processor with some very impressive specs.

Sanders would not reveal the expected clock frequency of AMD's upcoming Athlon processor — code-named Thunderbird — with integrated Level 2 cache and copper interconnects, which it expects to ship by midyear. AMD began shipping its fastest 1-GHz Athlon processors, built with its 0.18-micron process technology and aluminum interconnects, to a limited number of customers last month.

The Thunderbird chip, which is will be produced at the company's Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany, is based on a 0.18-micron, six-layer metal copper manufacturing process. The process was frozen last winter and later qualified at the end of last quarter.

Sun contemplates suing Microsoft.
Posted: 04/06/2000     Source: ZDNET  Added by: Kim Heise
This is ridiculous! Sun is consider suing Microsoft because of the whole Java fiasco. These are the type of reactions that I was worried about when the DOJ struck down Microsoft. Expect to see a whole slew of new lawsuits over the next couple of weeks.

Sun Microsystems Inc. is considering filing a private antitrust suit against Microsoft as a result of the way Microsoft has mishandled Java, said Sun general counsel Mike Morris on Wednesday.

Sun (Nasdaq: SUNW) is studying Jackson's decision "very carefully" as a result of his claim that Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) behavior toward Sun violated the Sherman Antitrust Act.

Jackson included the Java charges as part of the conclusions of law he released on Monday in the Department of Justice vs. Microsoft antitrust case.

America Online a Monopoly?
Posted: 04/05/2000     Source: eFront  Added by: Kim Heise
If the DOJ is going to throw rocks at Bill Gates then so should many other "bullies" be placed in the crosshairs. Speaking of which, Galaxy Internet has filed a lawsuit against AOL claiming they are monopolizing the market.

According to a small competitor AOL is exactly that, a monopoly. Massachusetts based Galaxy Internet Services has filed in Boston this week, charging AOL with prohibiting competition with its new software and business practices. Galaxy sued AOL last year with the claim that version 5.0 of AOL's software intentionally blocked rival ISPs from providing service to AOL users. Keep checking back for more information as the story develops.

Asus 64MB GeForce 256 DDR review.
Posted: 04/05/2000     Source: Firingsquad  Added by: Kim Heise
A 64MB video card? This is no joke as several hardware vendors are gearing up with some fancy 64MB GeForce powered video cards. To be honest - this is one of those toys for those of you who always have to the biggest and the best because today's software titles will not take advantage of the extra memory.
A couple of new titles with hi-res textures might see some minor performance gain but it's not worth the money.

I rest my case:
The card did not offer any compelling performance gains over the 32MB cards in any of our benchmarks. We feel that the market doesn't need a 64MB card yet, but that will change as games become more demanding.

Intel Pentium III Coppermine 866EB  review.
Posted: 04/05/2000     Source: GamePC  Added by: Kim Heise
Now that you can finally find Coppermine based Intel CPU's on the street, GamePC has posted a review of the 866mhz Pentium III. The 866mhz CPU is labeled "EB" which basically translates as E= Coppermine die at 0.18 micron and B=133mhz FSB speeds.

The CPU also sports a speedy 866mhz 256k L2-cache running at full speed. Earlier Pentium II generations clocked the L2 cache speed at 1/2 the CPU clock speed. This was to reduce the cost on manufacturing the CPU since L2 cache is one of the most expensive components.

Make sure that if you decide to purchase this model CPU that you find a respectable motherboard to support the 133mhz FSB (Front-Side Bus) speeds.

Looking at Microsoft VS. the DOJ.
Posted: 04/04/2000     Source: N/A  Added by: Kim Heise
Several people have asked me what I think about the Microsoft VS. DOJ fiasco. I think for the purpose of this web site it should not be a good idea for me to make any detailed comments.

What I will say - is that I disagree with the government's involvement and we should let the market decide what products it chooses to utilize. Any company in Microsoft's shoes would be following the exact same path.

Please don't send me response emails: I'm not a Microsoft only supporter and in fact I use three different operating systems.

3dfx delays the Voodoo 5 6000.

Just an FYI for those of you waiting for the Voodoo 5 6000 - 3dfx has announced there will be yet another delay before the card is available. Here's the Q&A with 3dfx:

Is the V5 6000 still on line for a late May/Early June release?

We have not announced a release date for the Voodoo5 6000 product, but it will be at least several months after the initial Voodoo5 5000/5500 product launch.

Was the Rampage production cycle affected at all by the problems with the VSA-100?

The schedule for Rampage was adjusted to adhere to the new schedule for the Voodoo4/5. Once we release Voodoo4/5, we will be back on track for our 6-9 month product cycle.

The rumor mill: Amiga preps dual-OS plan.
Posted: 04/04/2000     Source: The Register  Added by: Kim Heise
It's simply amazing to see the Amiga label still holding on after the demise of Commodore and moving between new potential investors every two minutes. The Register has posted some tasty news regarding the future of Amiga. Let's take a look:

During the show, the company said it had entered into partnerships with a series of companies, most notably Sun, Red Hat and Corel, put Java at the forefront of its software efforts and outlined its hardware plans.

The key announcement on the hardware front was an upcoming developer-oriented machine, designed to get coders working with Amiga's software technology as quickly as possible. Based on a 500MHz AMD K6-II and 64MB of RAM, it's not exactly the most powerful box out there, but it should be cheap. Nvidia will provide the graphics engine, a GeForce 256, though the company itself now has much bigger fish to fry thanks to its X-Box partnership with Microsoft.

And let us not forget these wise words:

Unlike many of these - and Be in particular - Amiga's plan takes in a number of possible core OS choices and processor choices, making it arguably the more flexible approach out there. Assuming, of course, it can deliver.

Until we some sort of official press release assume this is hearsay. If you wonder why I even posted this rumor, it is because I'm an ex-Amiga user and would love to see the machine survive.

Netscape mail customers frustrated.
Posted: 04/04/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise
Last week Netscape, AOL and CompuServe rolled all the email usernames into one single user database.

Here are some highlights to get to you fired up:

Netscape began combining email usernames of Netscape Netcenter, CompuServe and America Online into one database late last week. The move caused overlap in many email usernames, prompting Netscape to notify some customers that they had to change their identities.

Since then, message boards and emails have been full of complaints about WebMail, which was initially billed as a service that lets customers carry the same email address for life.

Of WebMail's more than 6 million account holders, about 480,000 are being forced to change their usernames.

"It's frustrating because this means that I have to contact everyone who has my email address and give them the new one, and that's going to be a headache," said Alison Wojtas, a teacher in Ottawa, Ontario, who was affected by the change. "I picked my username for simplicity--to change it means I have to change my identity."

Understanding FSAA.
Posted: 04/04/2000     Source: PCRAVE  Added by: Kim Heise
The latest "leaked" nVidia Detonator drivers 5.13 include a new rendering feature called Full Screen Anti-Aliasing or FSAA. This feature is what is being trumpeted by 3dfx in their upcoming series of Voodoo 4 and Voodoo 5 video cards and is now available in beta format for nVidia users.

Here's a direct quote from the article with regards to FSAA:

3dfx has been cranking up the hype machine for full scene anti-aliasing. FSAA, for which we will refer to abbreviated, is a technique which removes jagged lines from images. In the graphics world, this is a common technique for smoothing rough edges around lines of abrupt color change or distinct separation. Aliasing especially apparent at low resolutions.

Be warned that you will be hearing more and more about FSAA by various software companies so you should read this article to help arm yourself with relevant information to shoot down incoming hype. The bottom line with any new 3D rendering enhancement is that you will sacrifice performance for most new features.

Sega to give away Dreamcast.
Posted: 04/04/2000     Source: MSNBC  Added by: Kim Heise
MSNBC reports that Sega is going to issue $200 rebates for Dreamcast systems when you sign up for the SegaNet internet service at $21.00 a month. Sega will also be throwing in a free keyboard to sweeten the deal.

Sega is getting very concerned over the Playstation 2 which sold over 1 million units in just one weekend. Dreamcast sales have only topped 2 million since last September.

In the MSNBC article I also spotted this interesting little clip:
Sega also plans to have a specially designed MP3 player that inserts into the Dreamcast console, in the space which is currently occupied by the visual memory unit, for downloading music from the Internet. The device will cost below $100 and its 64 megabytes of disk space will store about two hours of music.

Microsoft found guilty!
Posted: 04/03/2000     Source: MSNBC  Added by: Kim Heise
Here's the latest update from the Judge's ruling:

TODAY’S LANDMARK RULING is the second of three crucial decisions Jackson will make in this case. In November, the judge issued a sweeping initial ruling finding that Microsoft does in fact have a monopoly over the PC operating system and has wielded it’s tremendous power to bully and bludgeon competitors, and stifle innovation wherever it sensed a potential threat.
In that 207-page ruling, Jackson found in favor of nearly every one of the government’s allegations, and said “Microsoft also engaged in a concerted series of actions designed to protect the applications barrier to entry, and hence its monopoly power, from a variety of middle-ware threats including Netscape’s Web browser and Sun Microsystem’s implementation of Java.”

Microsoft shares plummeted when the markets opened Monday following the breakdown of settlement talks over the weekend and the anticipation of a ruling that will go against the software giant.

FreeDSL goes live.
Posted: 04/03/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise
A new internet startup company is giving away free DSL connections but you will be bombarded by online advertisement and limited bandwidth. Isn't it funny that with AOL you still pay $25 or so a month and still get assaulted with advertisements plus limited bandwidth?

For about $10 a month you can removed the annoying advertisements and for $20 you can increase your bandwidth significantly.

An ambitious experiment in giving away free high-speed Internet connections is set to kick off officially today.

As earlier reported, the Broadband Digital Group launched its FreeDSL.com service on April Fools' Day, with the official announcement slated for today.

The free service will be presented to the public as the cheapest in a new series of bargain-basement deals being launched by high-speed Net companies desperate to attract subscribers to their technology.

New computer virus dials "911".
Posted: 04/03/2000     Source: BetaNews  Added by: Kim Heise

According to officials at the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), a new virus has been reported from four major ISPs in the area that can not only erase the hard drive of the computer it infects, but also dial the 911 emergency number and cause officers to make unwarranted visits to homes where the call is made.

Microsoft, DOJ setback.
Posted: 04/03/2000     Source: CNET  Added by: Kim Heise
Microsoft and the DOJ have broken off all talks because neither side could reach any agreement. The fallout is already rippling through the stock market as Microsoft's stock falls and it's rubbing off on NASDAQ.

The judge mediating settlement talks between Microsoft and the Justice Department declared today that the negotiations are at an impasse and he has ended his role in the landmark antitrust case.

"I regret to announce the end of my efforts to mediate the Microsoft antitrust case," Richard Posner said in a statement.

Posner, who heads the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, had given the talks until Wednesday but called it quits early. Today's setback opens to the door for a final ruling on the case at any time from U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson.

In addition, Microsoft's shares could be under pressure Monday. In recent days, the shares have climbed when a settlement appeared possible and dipped when the talks seemed to stall.

RAMBUS memory: Is it worth it?
Posted: 04/03/2000     Source: Toms Hardware  Added by: Kim Heise
If you are considering upgrading to Intel's new i820 chipset based motherboards then you should read this article first regarding RAMBUS. Before I go any further, look at this conclusion from Tom's Hardware:

Without any doubt, DDR SDRAM based systems, poised to be launched within the next few months, will outperform their SDRAM counterparts by significant margins, therefore leaving RDRAM systems lagging far behind. DDR SDRAM will also cost similarly to SDRAM, so will be much cheaper than RDRAM as well.

The moral of the story is that it is not worth purchasing a new system with RAMBUS for the extra cost involved. If you are looking to upgrade, pickup a stable BX motherboard that uses standard SDRAM memory for better performance/stability or wait for the DDR RAM motherboards. If DDR RAM video cards are any indication of how much of an improvement the new memory makes then you can be assured the motherboards will be very impressive.

Intel Celeron 600 review.
Posted: 04/03/2000     Source: AnandTech  Added by: Kim Heise
The first batch of new Intel "Coppermine" Celeron CPU's are moving into the consumer market and Anandtech has taken a very close look at what makes these new low-end CPU's special.

The new Intel Celeron CPU's are geared towards the low-end PC market when compared to using the newer Pentium III CPU's. The main difference between a Pentium III and the new Celeron is that the Celeron is still crippled with a 66mhz FSB (Front-Side Bus).

Anandtech's article looks at the difference the 100mhz VS. 66mhz FSB speed can do for a system and it turns out to be around 6% performance gain for the 100mhz bus speed. If you are looking for a low-cost upgrade then the new Celeron 600mhz CPU's are not a bad deal for around $150 but Pentium III 550 owners should not bother because in overall performance the P3 will always win.

As an FYI, here are the specs on the new "Coppermine" Celeron CPU:

·        0.18-micron Coppermine128 core

·        566/600MHz clock speed – 8.5/9.0x clock multiplier

·        32KB on-die L1 cache running at core speed

·        256-bit Advanced Transfer Cache - 128KB on-die L2 cache running at core speed

·        Advanced System Buffering

·        370-pin FC-PGA Socket-370 GTL+ CPU interface running at 66MHz

·        1.50v core voltage
